A multi-engine rating allows a pilot to operate as pilot-in-command of an aircraft with more than one engine.
The multi-engine rating is for those pilots who want the security of having a second engine available in the event of an engine failure. The multi-engine rating is also essential for pilots moving up to charter, corporate, or airline aviation. Up to this point, you have maintained proficiency in a single-engine aircraft. However, the multi-engine rating will allow you to fly airplanes with two, three, four, or more engines.
During training the student will be exposed to a new aircraft with two engines, and be trained by a qualified and proficient instructor pilot on normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures. Extensive time will be allocated towards engine-out procedures, or the loss of an engine during takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, approach, and missed approach phases of flight. In general, multi-engine flying keeps you busier because you are now monitoring and managing two separate engines. The instructor pilot will also train you to proficiency on stalls, steep turns, single-engine taxi, short field and soft field takeoffs and landings, crosswind landings, and a variety of different real flying scenarios.
The instructor pilot will determine if the student is ready for his flight test, or if he needs additional time to feel more comfortable with a multi-engine aircraft. There is no good reason to rush someone through the multi-engine pilot program. As safety of flight is #1, every student will receive as much time as necessary to ensure that he is able to fly a multi-engine aircraft safely and efficiently to the commercial pilot standards.
